Before you buy a VPN deal
That $2 VPN deal might cost you $48 today.
A low monthly equivalent can be useful. It can also hide a larger commitment than you need. Compare the payment, the months of service and the next bill before deciding whether a Black Friday offer is cheaper.
You need a VPN for a three-month trip. One offer advertises $2 a month. Another costs $4.50, billed monthly. The first looks cheaper until you see that it requires a 24-month payment.
These are illustrative prices, not offers from a provider. They show why the answer depends on how long you need the service.
| Plan | Pay today | Cash paid for 3 months of use | Service purchased |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2/mo equivalent, prepaid | $48 | $48 | 24 months |
| $4.50/mo, monthly billing | $4.50 | $13.50 | 3 months, then stop renewing |
The monthly plan uses $34.50 less cash for this trip. The prepaid plan buys much more time. For 24 months of use, the same monthly rate would total $108, while the prepaid term still costs $48. Neither plan is automatically better; they solve different needs.
This distinction also applies to actual subscriptions. NordVPN’s billing explanation says its one- and two-year subscriptions charge the full plan price at once. An advertised monthly equivalent does not mean a monthly charge.
Write down four numbers before checkout
- The full first payment. Include the selected tier and any checkout taxes or add-ons. Compare the amount charged, not just the percentage crossed out beside it.
- The months of service that payment buys. Include bonus months once. A 24-month payment with three extra months buys 27 months; it does not establish that the cash price has fallen.
- The renewal amount and its billing period. A two-year introductory term can renew annually. “$80 renewal” means little until you know whether it buys one month, one year or two years. Leave unavailable terms unknown.
- The months you actually need. A holiday, a short contract and several years of regular use can lead to different sensible purchases. Check device support and the features in that tier before comparing costs.
Our VPN cost calculator compares captured US/USD plans for your chosen duration and upfront budget. It includes observed renewals when your duration needs them. Future rates can change, and a partner link can open a different default plan, so confirm the selected plan and final bill at checkout.
Does a bigger discount mean a better Black Friday deal?
Only if the comparison describes the purchase you intend to make. A percentage may compare a long-term offer with monthly billing, a different tier or a different reference amount. A larger percentage alone does not show that today’s payment is lower than last week’s.
For a useful price-history comparison, keep the provider, tier, currency, months of service and source route consistent. A public pricing page and an exclusive partner page can show different offers. Moving from one to the other should not be counted as a price drop on the same series.
The DoVPN price explorer lets you inspect recorded observations and their coverage. USD and native EUR stay separate. A missing observation is a gap, and carried-forward or changed-source records need their labels. Read the methodology before treating an observed low as an all-time low.
A frozen monthly release records what was captured during that month. It cannot establish an unobserved price or predict this November’s sale. Save the offer details privately if you want to compare the same route later.
Should you buy now or wait?
If you need a VPN today, choose a plan that meets your needs at a payment you can afford. A free plan can fit ordinary browsing. For example, Proton’s plan documentation distinguishes its free plan’s automatic country selection and one simultaneous connection from the paid plan’s country choice and additional connections.
If the purchase can wait, record the four numbers and compare the same offer during the sale. Waiting may help, but there is no evidence here that a future discount will be better. A Black Friday date is also not evidence of a provider’s checkout deadline.
Check refund eligibility and how to stop renewal before committing. Proton’s cancellation guide explains how its process differs for subscriptions bought through its site, Apple and Google. Cancellation and a refund are separate actions; the conditions depend on where you purchased.

Provider documentation linked above was checked on October 11, 2026. The $2 and $4.50 example is fictional and excludes tax, add-ons and renewal after the stated period. It compares payments, not provider quality or performance. Calculator observations have their own dates and source links; confirm current checkout terms before purchase.
