Hands-on VPN review

Amnezia Premium review: a VPN for harder-to-reach internet

When your usual VPN stops connecting, a longer server list is not much comfort. Amnezia Premium focuses on that problem: keeping access available on networks that try to identify and block VPN traffic. It gives you managed servers, two ways to connect and support from the team developing the technology. For someone who wants those tools without running a server, it is a compelling service to try.

Our verdict

A practical choice when ordinary VPNs struggle

Amnezia Premium combines managed servers with two anti-blocking protocols and seven device slots. We liked its everyday performance and Android network switching. Desktop sleep recovery and persistent kill-switch protection are the main reasons to be selective about who we recommend it to.

What do you get with Amnezia Premium?

Premium is the paid, managed service inside the free AmneziaVPN app. You pay for access to Amnezia’s servers and support, then use the app on your phone or computer. There is no cloud server to rent, secure or maintain yourself. That distinction matters: advice about installing Amnezia on your own server does not describe the experience of buying Premium.

One subscription covers seven simultaneous connections. Amnezia lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV and iOS, alongside unlimited bandwidth. That is enough flexibility for a laptop, phone and several household devices. Our hands-on experience covers Windows, Linux and a physical Android phone; we have not tested every platform.

Premium makes most sense when reliable access is your priority and you prefer a fairly focused app. If you mainly want a huge choice of exit countries or a bundle of extra security products, compare alternatives before committing. You are paying here for managed access and anti-blocking technology.

Strengths, weaknesses and who should choose it

Strengths

Where Premium stands out

  • AmneziaWG and VLESS offer two ways to connect on difficult networks.
  • Managed servers remove the work of running your own VPN.
  • Open-source apps and a public security audit with verified fixes.
  • Seven device slots and clear upfront plan prices.
  • Streaming and torrenting worked in our editor’s checks.

Best fit: people seeking an alternative when their usual VPN struggles, and households wanting managed access across several devices.

Weaknesses

What to weigh before buying

  • Windows app termination and sleep recovery exposed the ordinary connection in our tested version.
  • Desktop wake recovery sometimes needed manual intervention.
  • Connection-IP retention remains less clearly defined than we would like.
  • Fewer locations than the largest VPN networks, with limited native router support.
  • Restricted-network success is provider-reported and varies by network.

Compare alternatives: if you need persistent Windows protection, a specific streaming library or a router-first setup.

Amnezia’s strongest case is practical access: two connection methods, managed servers and support from the people developing the anti-blocking technology. It is a particularly relevant option when a conventional VPN has become unreliable on your network.

Our editor also found streaming and torrenting worked. Those successes broaden its everyday appeal, but they do not remove the platform-specific protection limits below. Match the strengths to the device and situation you actually use.

7 simultaneous connections 14-day refund commitment No automatic renewal on direct website purchases

The six-month plan is the smallest advertised commitment: $30 upfront, equivalent to $5 a month. A year costs $50, or about $4.17 a month. Two years cost $80, equivalent to $3.33 a month. These monthly figures help compare value; you pay the full term at checkout.

For a new user, the shortest plan reduces the amount committed before you know how the service behaves on your network. The two-year plan has the lowest monthly equivalent and saves $40 against four six-month purchases at these prices. The annual plan sits between them, with a $10 saving against two six-month purchases.

The website terms describe one-time payments without automatic renewal. Choose six months for the lowest upfront payment, one year for a middle commitment, or two years for the lowest monthly equivalent. The current two-year price is not a promise about the price of a later purchase.

Refunds and purchase terms

Amnezia confirmed to us that Premium purchases have a 14-day refund window from the purchase of the key, including after you have used the service. Contact support within that window and keep the email or key used for your purchase so the team can identify it.

We have not made a refund claim ourselves. The published payment policy also mentions payment or network-fee deductions and separate rules for purchases from other sellers, so check the terms attached to your payment method. Amnezia also offers a seven-day trial on request through support.

Does Amnezia Premium work in Russia and on restricted networks?

Helping people connect from restrictive networks is Amnezia’s strongest reason to be on your shortlist. The provider reports daily testing across major Russian mobile operators and home internet providers. It tells us that both AmneziaWG and VLESS are stable, and no longer recommends VLESS exclusively for Russia.

Treat that as provider-reported experience, not a guarantee for every connection. Filtering can differ between a mobile carrier and your home broadband provider, then change again later. If one protocol struggles, try the other. Having both in the same subscription is useful when your usual connection method stops working.

We have not independently tested Premium from inside a censored network. Our own tests establish how it behaved on our test connections, while Amnezia supplies the regional experience above. The service has also faced targeted blocking and availability disruption, including in June 2026; the team responded with a series of updates. Keep the app current and retain the alternative website link if the main domain is inaccessible.

A Russia exit server serves a different purpose: it gives you a Russian-facing connection from elsewhere. Its availability does not by itself tell you whether the VPN connects from a Russian ISP. Some websites may also reject VPN addresses even when the tunnel itself works.

How AmneziaWG and VLESS help you connect

Two ways to reach Amnezia Premium Your device can connect using AmneziaWG, which changes recognizable VPN traffic patterns, or VLESS Reality, which resembles encrypted web traffic. Both lead to a Premium server and then the internet. Neither guarantees access on every network. Your device AmneziaWG Changes recognizable VPN traffic patterns VLESS Reality Resembles encrypted web traffic Premium server Internet
Your device
AmneziaWG Changes recognizable VPN patterns
VLESS Reality Resembles encrypted web traffic
Premium server → Internet
Two approaches give you options when a network filters one of them. Use the one that connects most consistently; neither guarantees access everywhere.

AmneziaWG builds on WireGuard, a modern VPN protocol, and changes recognizable features of its traffic so network filters have a harder time identifying it. Think of it as changing the visible pattern of the connection while still encrypting the traffic inside. Current Premium documentation describes AmneziaWG 3.1.

XRay VLESS Reality is the other option. It uses a different approach to making the connection resemble ordinary encrypted web traffic. That difference is useful: a network that interferes with one type of traffic may still allow the other. Start with AmneziaWG, then switch if connection reliability is poor.

You do not need to tune cryptographic settings to benefit from this. The practical job is choosing the protocol that connects consistently on your network. Neither makes a VPN universally undetectable, and neither can promise permanent access against changing blocks. Our separate AmneziaWG analysis explains the protocol changes in more detail.

Getting started: from subscription to connection

Install AmneziaVPN from the official download page, then copy your subscription key from the purchase email or Premium dashboard. Add it through the app’s plus button or initial setup screen, continue and connect. Keep the key private: it provides access to your subscription. You can then choose an available server location and change protocol when needed.

Check compatibility before paying, especially on older computers. The main macOS app currently requires macOS 14 or later. On iOS in Russia, AmneziaVPN may be unavailable in the local App Store; the documentation points to DefaultVPN as an alternative. Exported configuration files have different device-slot rules, so follow the platform instructions rather than assuming every client behaves like the main app.

What is Amnezia Premium like to use?

Our Linux setup was straightforward, and ordinary connected use was more reassuring than the interruption tests. We browsed, played video and transferred files during an hour-long session without a connection drop. Switching to VLESS also worked. That is the everyday experience most people want: connect, open the app or website you need, and get on with it.

Android was the most consistent of our tested platforms when moving between networks. On a Samsung Galaxy S25 running Android 16, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data kept traffic on the VPN connection. Locking the phone and waking it two minutes later also worked without a manual reconnect. Routine leak checks did not expose the phone’s ordinary public address.

Windows passed our routine connected leak checks and recovered after an Ethernet interruption. Sleep was less reliable on both desktop platforms: Linux kept traffic blocked but needed manual recovery, while Windows could leave ordinary internet traffic outside the VPN during a stuck reconnect. These findings come from July and August 2026 builds, not a retest of the latest release.

Amnezia acknowledges the Linux wake issue and says a fix is planned. For now, make checking the connection after waking a laptop part of your routine. If you need a VPN that recovers unattended every time, this is a more important limitation than the app’s appearance or number of settings.

Android

Smooth network changes

Wi-Fi/mobile switching and lock/wake passed. System VPN lockdown blocked traffic after force-stop; reconnecting was manual.

Linux

Good sessions, manual wake recovery

Browsing and video worked during our sustained session. Sleep recovery needed intervention, with traffic safely blocked.

Windows

Watch the protection limits

Routine leak checks passed. App termination and failed sleep recovery could expose the normal connection.

How fast is Amnezia Premium?

Our repeated Linux download tests showed the best performance through nearby France. The median was 77.14 Mbps against a 73.32 Mbps connection without the VPN. The small apparent improvement reflects normal variation between test paths; it does not mean a VPN will make your broadband faster.

Distance had a noticeable effect. The UAE route delivered 44.95 Mbps and Australia 32.79 Mbps. Both remained usable for ordinary browsing and video, but larger downloads took longer. Choose a nearby location when you do not need a particular country, then change it if routing or congestion makes another option faster.

A separate hour-long session through France stayed connected throughout browsing and a ten-minute video stream. A large-file transfer in that session averaged about 205 Mbps. It used a different workload from the repeated speed tests, so it demonstrates what that session achieved rather than replacing the comparison in the chart.

Amnezia advertises speeds up to 200 Mbps. Your result will depend on your broadband or mobile connection, server distance and network conditions. The useful takeaway from our tests is that Premium handled everyday activity comfortably on a working connection; recovery after interruption was the weaker part of the experience.

Streaming, travel and choosing a server

Premium offers a choice of managed locations for travel and regional access. Amnezia’s FAQ now lists 44 locations, while its Premium landing page still lists 20. Check the locations available in your app or with support before choosing a plan for a particular country; neither list guarantees access to a specific streaming library.

Streaming worked in our editor’s additional checks, as did video playback in our earlier everyday-use test. The additional checks do not yet establish a service-by-service or country-by-country result. Streaming availability can change as platforms block VPN addresses, so check the services you need soon after setting up your subscription.

Torrenting also worked in our editor’s checks. Amnezia identifies Switzerland as its P2P location; we have not measured sustained torrent speeds or verified port forwarding. For unattended downloads, the Windows kill-switch limitation matters: successful transfers do not establish that traffic stays protected if the app stops.

For a whole-home connection, check compatibility before buying. Seven supported devices does not mean any router will work: current Premium protocol configurations need compatible software, and native router support is limited.

Privacy, Romania and the limits of “no logs”

Amnezia identifies ANARCHY LAB S.R.L. in Romania as the controller responsible for personal data. That gives subscribers a named company and a relevant data-protection jurisdiction. For questions about personal data, this is the controller identified in the privacy policy.

The policy says Amnezia does not collect browsing history, the sites you visit or the contents of VPN traffic. It does collect an email for a direct purchase, app and operating-system information, and an app-generated device identifier. It also allows connection IP addresses to be retained in locations where extra technical measures are needed to keep the service available.

That distinction matters more than a simple “no logs” badge. Someone looking for access without a browsing-history record may find the policy suitable. Someone who requires a guarantee that no connection IP can ever be retained should look more closely: the policy does not state a fixed retention period. Romanian jurisdiction does not remove that limitation.

The apps are open source, so specialists can inspect their code. Amnezia also says its servers operate in RAM only. Those are useful transparency and infrastructure features, but they do not replace the privacy policy or prove that no operational data is retained anywhere.

The kill switch: the limitation to understand before buying

A kill switch is meant to stop traffic escaping through your normal internet connection when VPN protection fails. Amnezia’s Soft KillSwitch works while the VPN interface is active. Amnezia explains that closing the app or removing that interface is treated as exiting the VPN, rather than a request to keep the whole device offline.

In our Windows tests, stopping the app and a failed wake-from-sleep recovery allowed the normal connection to become visible. Linux blocked traffic during its tested tunnel and sleep failures. Android’s system “Always-on VPN” and “Block connections without VPN” settings also blocked traffic after we force-stopped the app, though we had to reconnect manually after reopening it.

For ordinary browsing where a brief return to your usual connection is tolerable, this may be a manageable trade-off. For sensitive activity where your real address must never appear, it is a reason to choose a service with verified persistent blocking on your device. Amnezia says a stronger Hard KillSwitch is planned; we are not treating that as an available feature.

Security audits and support

Amnezia has a public security assessment by 7ASecurity, supported by the Open Technology Fund. The 2025 review found serious issues, including two critical findings and one high-risk finding. Amnezia fixed them, and the auditor verified the fixes. That documented repair process is a stronger reason for confidence than an unsupported claim that a product has never had a vulnerability.

The assessment covered the apps and selected service components, including Premium administration, but not the entire underlying cloud infrastructure. It also predates the current protocol release. We give Amnezia credit for publishing the work and completing remediation without presenting it as a guarantee about every part of the current service.

Support is available through Telegram and email. Our Telegram exchange answered both billing and technical questions; we did not time response speed. For a product used on networks that can change their blocking rules, access to protocol-specific help is valuable. Keep your purchase details handy and explain which app, protocol and connection are failing when asking for assistance.

Should you buy Amnezia Premium?

Amnezia Premium deserves a place on your shortlist if standard VPN connections struggle on your network and you want managed access without maintaining a server. Two different connection methods, open-source apps and help from the team behind the technology make a coherent offer. Its value is greatest when those connection options solve a problem on the networks you actually use.

Choose six months for a smaller upfront commitment or two years for the lowest monthly equivalent. Android users have encouraging results from our network-change tests. Laptop users should pay closer attention to sleep recovery, and anyone who needs persistent protection after the app stops should consider the kill-switch limitation decisive.

Our overall rating reflects those trade-offs across privacy, safety, performance and usability. It is not a prediction of whether Amnezia will connect on your particular ISP. For the right buyer, access that works where their usual VPN struggles can be worth more than features they never use. Establish that fit first, then choose the term that matches how long you expect to need it.

How we tested and rated Amnezia Premium

We used Premium on Linux, Windows and a physical Samsung Galaxy S25. Our July 27 to August 1, 2026 tests covered versions 4.8.21.0 and 5.0.0.5: repeated speed runs, browsing and video, leak checks, network changes, app termination and sleep recovery. Newer releases have not completed the same test battery. Our editor has additionally confirmed successful streaming and torrenting; services, locations and versions for those checks are not yet documented. We have not made a refund request.

Amnezia supplied the restricted-network experience and clarified its refund policy, data jurisdiction and kill-switch design. Regional results are not independently verified by DoVPN. The rating is provisional because those results and newer releases need further assessment.

See how the rating is calculated

We assess privacy, security, performance and usability, alongside features intended for restrictive networks. Currently 92% of the weighted criteria are assessed. The rating divides earned points by that assessed weight; unverified regional performance is left unscored, not treated as a failure. We convert the resulting percentage to a five-point scale and round once to one decimal. Refund clarity, the identified Romanian data controller and straightforward everyday setup receive credit. Measured recovery and protection limitations lower the result. See our review methodology for the scoring rules.

Where Amnezia earns its points

This is a security-and-evidence-weighted rating, not a satisfaction survey. A 3/5 criterion means the middle benchmark is met; higher marks need the broader performance or assurance specified in our methodology. Evidence gaps can limit the conclusion without showing that the service performs badly.

Strongest marksPublic audit, transparency and response to blocking: 4/5 each.
Most room to improvePersistent Windows protection, desktop recovery and clearer connection-data retention.

Everyday browsing, streaming and torrenting worked in our checks. Streaming and torrenting have no separate points in this censorship-focused model. Windows protection and desktop recovery are assessed separately because staying protected and reconnecting successfully are different requirements, although the same interruption can affect both.

Privacy, security and everyday use

Criterion Score Weighted points Why it scored this way
Logging policy and data handling 1/5 1.4 / 7 The policy is narrower than broad no-logs marketing: it permits conditional connection-IP retention without a clear fixed period. This is a transparency concern, not evidence of browsing-history logging.
Independent security assessment 4/5 5.6 / 7 A public security audit and independently verified fixes earn strong credit. Full cloud infrastructure was outside scope.
Operator identity and jurisdiction 3/5 2.4 / 4 The Romanian data controller is identified. The wider ownership and infrastructure picture is incomplete.
IP, DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak resistance 3/5 6.0 / 10 Routine connected and reconnect checks passed. Wider platform and edge-case coverage would support a higher mark.
Kill switch and connection-failure safety 0/5 0.0 / 7 The tested Windows app allowed the ordinary connection after app termination and failed sleep recovery. Android lockdown and Linux blocked traffic in their tested cases.
Protocol and cryptographic design 3/5 3.0 / 5 Modern protocols and inspectable source support the design. This does not establish an independent assessment of every deployed configuration.
Speed and connection stability 3/5 4.8 / 8 Nearby speed and the sustained session were good; distant throughput was lower. The highest anchor also requires strong distant performance.
Apps, setup, and everyday usability 3/5 3.0 / 5 Setup and ordinary use were straightforward. Platform differences prevent top marks.
Pricing, renewal, and refund transparency 3/5 2.4 / 4 Upfront prices and the provider-confirmed 14-day refund are credited. We have not completed a refund request.
Support quality 3/5 1.8 / 3 Support answered our billing and technical questions. Response times were not measured.
Security and availability incident handling 3/5 3.0 / 5 Public updates document a response to disruption; independent recovery evidence remains limited.
Technical and organizational transparency 4/5 4.0 / 5 Open-source clients, documentation, public releases and audits earn strong credit.

Features for restrictive networks

Criterion Score Weighted points Why it scored this way
Obfuscation design and implementation 3/5 6.0 / 10 The anti-blocking design is documented and inspectable. Its effectiveness against particular network filters is less independently established.
Results on restricted networks Unscored 8 excluded Amnezia reports daily tests in Russia. We attribute those results to the provider and exclude this weight from the calculation.
Response to new blocking 4/5 4.0 / 5 Dated releases show rapid responses to blocking and availability problems.
Fallback protocols and distribution resilience 3/5 2.4 / 4 VLESS and alternative distribution routes provide practical options. Not all current platform and restricted-network combinations were tested.
Recovery and usability while blocked 1/5 0.6 / 3 Android handled network changes well. Desktop sleep recovery sometimes required manual intervention.

The calculation: 50.4 points earned ÷ 92 assessed × 5 = 2.74, rounded to 2.7/5. The 8-point regional-results criterion is excluded, not scored zero. This provisional result reflects the tested versions and evidence described above.
